Shovel Birdhouse by Jan Habraken

The Shovel Birdhouse by Jan Habraken is just that – a shovel with a birdhouse built into the handle.  A bird’s diet consists of seeds and worms.  With this birdhouse, the bird can wiggle his own worms out of the ground by simply landing on the house and letting the subsequent momentum do the work.  The birds gathering, pecking and enjoying their little birdy cafe.

Cardboard children’s chair by Heikki Ruoh

These cardboard series, designed by Heikki Ruoh for Showroom Finland, are light, eco-friendly and very beautiful indeed. The Kenno children’s chair is the result of experimentation with a new kind of recycled cardboard. The sturdy yet lightweight material can be re-recycled as paper; water-based adhesives are used to create its sandwich construction.

XI bookshelf by Gonçalo Campos

The simple but stylish XI bookshelf by Gonçalo Campos is designed to be very simple to assemble, without the use of any screws or fixtures. Its assembly becomes very simple due to the very carefully placed fittings that allow for the parts to lock together, like a wooden puzzle.

Despite it’s dynamic look, this shelf is very sturdy, because of it’s X structure and the suspended vertical support, that holds the loose ends of the horizontal parts. The bookshelf fits perfect with the tinny little companion called Placa lamp – also designed by Gonçalo.

Berghotel “Muottas Muragl” – St. Moritz

One of my favorite place in switzerland, the 104 year old Berghotel Muottas Muragl has been completely renovated! During summer 2010, the entire Hotel was completely renovated. Particular focus was placed on the aspect of environmental-friendliness, giving rise to the first plus-energy hotel in the Alps. Hot water is obtained by means of solar energy produced by the 60 sq. metres of pipe solar collectors installed in the glass window panes in the basement. Sixteen thermal loops with an average length of 200 metres, making 3,200 metres in total, supply the entire building with geothermal energy. In addition, all the necessary electricity is generated by the most efficient photovoltaic system in Switzerland, extending 228 metres along the railway line.At 8,000 feet above sea level, hotel guests can only arrive two ways, by helicopter, or by one tram that goes from the village below to the hotel; making this an exclusive and private escape for ski bums around the world.
